Wide open election
To the editor:
In the Thursday article headlined, "Angle out; 15 others join race," reporter Laura Myers mentions the Democratic and Republican candidates, but doesn't mention any of the other candidates, including Independent American Tim Fasano.
The 2nd Congressional District special election includes candidates from three political parties and three independents. Yet it seems that this article considers only two political parties.
The Independent American Party is the third-largest party in Nevada and the fastest-growing party in Nevada. Four of its candidates won their election in 2010.
To inform the public, it seems that all the candidates should have at least been mentioned in the article with a short comment. This election is wide open, and the Review-Journal should make an effort to provide the voters with the information necessary to make an enlightened decision.

Joe.Homeboy,
Spoken like someone that has either ran a business or really looked into it. It is nice to see that someone that is employed by an other is gratful for those of us in Nevada that take these risks every single day.
Nancy if business is as easy as your obviously liberal mind believes than why are there so many small businesses out of business and lots of others just hanging in there trying to make ends meet. All of this and no paid vacations or cushy retirement plans either.
I don't know who your trying to kid about being in business because being in business and trying to survive this economy can scare the liberal out of the stanchest of Democrats.

This is civics 101, maybe a refresher course is due if your wasting time looking for your tax information in the constitution. Joe.Homeboy wrote on May 30, 2011 04:22 PM: Nancy, your responses are baffling! You make it sound like owning and operating a business is easy. Just open the doors, collect the money, count your profits and go home! I don't think so! Please advise me where it sez in the constitution that a person making more than $250,000 a year has to pay extra taxes? Where does it say that 40% of the population can pay no taxes? Maybe some Demorat liberal judge has interpreted a clause that vaguely hints at something like that! That's why we have anchor babies now. Let me know so that I tell my friends that constitutionally they have to pay extra taxes! Thanks! nancy. wrote on May 30, 2011 03:01 PM: you should be rewarded and are. Why should you be rewarded by not paying taxes. Yes I have had small businesses two S CORPS and presently a sole prop. I haven't worked for anyone for more than 35 years, unless you call the long hours and sleepless nights that go with owning your own business. Raising taxes on people who make more than 250,000 would not hurt most . Yhe rates are a lot less now than they were in the 1980. If you want to help small businesses get ride of the red tape that goes with opening an operating a business. vegasbigfoot wrote on May 30, 2011 02:13 PM: Nancy ... another who thinks you shouldn't be rewarded for your risk and efforts. I doubt your claim of having small businesses. As far as the Chamber goes, most small business owners are independent types. They don't tend to be "joiners" of organizations. Their own creative juices are enough for them without having to attend meetings and, in their opinion, time wasting gatherings. The small business should be coddled. They are the backbone of the country. ... nancy. wrote on May 30, 2011 11:08 AM: I have had small businesses and those business never paid any tax other than property taxes , payroll, and any fees and such that were collected from the public. most small businesses are either S corps Or sole prop. The profits or losses are passed to the owners who declare it on their personal taxes. When the losses are more than you can use in any year they can be carried over from year to year to off set income. It doesn't take to much accounting savy to almost get what you pay your self completly written off, A lot of small business also employ the spouse and childern ,who are paid sometimes more than the market rate....Another words it is not hard to stack a S corp with deductions that are favorable to the owner on thier personal tax.. So if after all that I have a positive of 250,000 on the bottom line I can aford to pay more taxes and should, I would have had a much higher actual take home pay than that. Sole prop. and S corps are great for giving thier owners a lot of deductions and a lot of expenses that can be ran through the co. that benft the owners notacon2 wrote on May 30, 2011 10:41 AM: Small business owners pay PLENTY in taxes and get little government support. Its the large corporations that have the system rigged so they pay very low or no taxes and get extensive government support such as cushy defense contracts, government support for R&D that they should be doing anyway to support their ongoing business or military support for the oil companies. We need to at least have a minimum tax on the profits of large corporations. GE paying no taxes...geez.. Americancitizen wrote on May 30, 2011 10:05 AM: As a small business owner myself, I resent the fact that many people run "small businesses" and do not pay taxes, buy business licenses and have no overhead. i.e. those who set up shop on street corners, vacant lots, etc. (many are illegal aliens). Most of the time they are trespassing on someone's personal property or public property. They put up signs on fences, property and light/power poles, mailboxes, directory boxes at gated communities, etc. -- so there is no adverstising expense either. Further they put flyers on cars under wiper blades (I hate this), on front doors or tape their flyers to people's garage doors. I have to pay to advertise, do not infringe on other people's property or litter their vehicles with flyers. If american citizens or otherwise, they need to do business legally. Illegal aliens say they come here for a better life ,,they need to come legally and follow all the rules we citizens have to follow when they conduct business. Who could not make a profit by not paying business expenses, taxes, buying business licenses, having a free place to conduct business and free advertising????? But the govt wants to tax law abiding businesses right out of business. John F wrote on May 30, 2011 09:38 AM: @ desertNorwegian: I did answer your question. Doesn't the fact that the Chamber of Commerce is not lobbying to change the tax system tell you something about the tax system? They are obviously happy with it where it is. The tax system isn't fair, but it's unfair in the favor of business. Joe.Homeboy wrote on May 30, 2011 08:47 AM: Jim Thomson; After retiring from my first career, I wanted to start a small business in CA. I quickly learned about workers comp, and a whole slew of other expenses for just a few employees. Needless to say, it scared the heck out of me and I went to work for another company and let them bear the costs of runnning the business. I am impressed by people that take the risk of starting a businees and I want them to succeed and become millionaires! I don't want to tax then to death. I want them to succeed and spread the wealth. Most people want the reward but not the risk! Demorats and Liberals are the leading advocates of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. This will eventually doom America!
